…and you thought my hobbies were weird

Friday, December 28th, 2001

Just to prove that I'm not the only person that finds weird things to do while at university, I give you Squirrel Fishing. I'm particularly fond of this photo of the final result. There are more photos here, if you think this is a one-off attempt.

A new kind of coffee buzz

Friday, December 28th, 2001

Coffee is now not only good for you, but it's also good for the environment. It seems that waste coffee grounds make a good negative electrode inside lithium-ion batteries. Not only is this going to reduce the amount of landfill, but it apparently reduces the cost of manufacturing the batteries by up to 10 percent.

I think we should all start drinking more coffee. For the environment, of course.

Merry Quakemas

Friday, December 28th, 2001

It's a little late, but I'd like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. My little break was very nice, but if I eat anything else I think I'll explode.

One of the things that I missed while stuffing myself silly was the GPL release of the Quake II source code. Two years to the day after releasing the source for Quake, ID Software have given us all the code to the sequel. What a present, indeed.

The Church of Vader

Saturday, December 22nd, 2001

Yes, it seems ol' asthma-helmet has his own church now. Or, at least, that's what I first thought when I saw that image.

Apparently, there was a competition for children to design the gargoles for the cathedral, and this was the third place winner. There's a great discussion over at Metafilter about it.

The Inc. is for Incredible

Saturday, December 22nd, 2001

Last night my wonderful wife took me to an advance screening of Monsters, Inc. (it's only just been released here in Australia, you know). Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy — it was such a great movie. It's right up there with Toy Story, Toy Story 2 and A Bugs Life. The CG work is fantastic, the plot is excellent and the characters are hillarious. Even the short cartoon at the beginning of the movie was memorable (there should be more of those, please).

I'm giving it five out of five eyeballs — a must-see movie. (When you do see it, don't forget to hang around through the entire credits)

Chess on drugs

Friday, December 21st, 2001

I think I've just found a game that will consume my Friday productivity (it's a Java applet, but very stable). It's Chess, but you play it in real time, moving multiple pieces to fight off up to three human opponents. A small timer on each piece stops you moving to too often, leading to some very nifty tactics. It sounds odd, but it's one of the most fun online games I've played in a long time.
