The Grinch in the Hat

Sunday, November 30th, 2003

Dr Seuss' “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” was apparently not a very worthwhile movie. I wouldn't know, because I boycotted it. Dr Seuss (Ted Geisel) never wanted a live-action, mass commercialised Grinch, but after his death his wife decided that she knew better.

Obviously my personal boycott didn't make too big a difference, however, as we are now faced with another big-budget adaption of a Seuss novel. Movie makes money; movie gets “sequel”. Such is the way of Hollywood.

Luckily, it seems that this version of “The Cat in the Hat” is one of the most unwatchable pieces of tripe to visit the screens in some time, even for those who don't notice Seuss quietly rolling in his grave in the background. Hopefully people will listen to the reviews, won't go and see it, and that will be the end of that. Unfortunately, I get the feeling that this movie will simply leave a generation of kids thinking that Seuss' work is rubbish, which is so very far from the truth.

…aaaaaand we're back

Did you miss me? Did you notice I wan't here?

No, I didn't think so.

The Lost Realm has moved to newer and funkier hosting. I also gave things a bit of a spring cleaning, so if there's something missing that should be here, do let me know. Cute photos of cats will be returning soon (because we all know that's what the Interwebberynet needs more of).

This wouldn't be a problem if standards were stricter

Cool web-development gizmo of the day: see a webpage as viewed in Safari on an actual Mac.

The site uses an actual iMac and returns screen captures of the displayed content, so you really do get to see the layout in Safari. You don't get to see anything more than a single screenful, and there's obviously no interactivity, but it's a whole lot cheaper than going out and buying a Mac just to realise that there's yet another browser out there that renders your content differently.

Tupperware and geekiness

Saturday, November 22nd, 2003

Today I was trapped in my own house. Trapped as a Tupperware party was held in the next room. Unable to escape, I feared for my life, for my very (lifetime guaranteed) sanity, but seem to have escaped unscathed.

Given my incarceration and that my planned server installation is still waiting for an actual server, I was left me with a little time to discover such interesting news items as this: some smart little cookie has found a perfect magic cube of order 5. It's astounding that they've known that the middle number had to be 63 for the last 31 years, but it has taken until now to crunch enough numbers to fill in the blanks.

Okay, perhaps I'm the only person on the planet who thinks this is actually cool, but I'm going to post it here anyway. After my near Tupperware exposure, I think I deserve a little leniency.

Please give me back my pants

Well, it has been nearly two months since my last post (that sounds far too much like the beginning of an AA meeting). The instruction manual says that I shouldn't really leave the place without a dusting for so long, so here I am.

It's no coincidence that the last post before this one was about Romilly walking. Now that she's up and mobile, life is definitely a lot busier around here. After her first birthday it just seems that she won't stop growing up. The Bean's not a baby anymore; she's growing into a little geek (much to Debs' annoyance).

In between Romilly, work and collapsing into bed, I've been busy upgrading computer hardware, upgrading operating systems and preparing to move all of lostrealm.com's hosting (to somewhere that won't be closing down at the end of the year). I'm not quite sure why that hasn't left me with time to update here, but I'm hoping that this will be the start of my regular posting once again (hey, if he can do it, so can I). That's the plan, anyway. If I go missing for another month or two, feel free to grump in my general direction.
