A lesson in time management

Why is this site still looking as boring as it did a week ago? I’ll tell you: it’s because I’ve done nothing to it. (That wasn’t so hard now, was it?)

You see, some people don’t know how to relax. I am not one of those people. In fact, I’m often found to be over-relaxing. At 1am.

In short, Half-Life 2 is the best game I’ve ever played, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch and Counter-Strike: Source are far too addictive, and I need to put an alarm clock in here next to my computer so I know when it’s time to go to bed.

Yes best game ever, worst delivery system ever :)

Love the game and everything but it is almost impossible to setup at our LAN. Updating and verifying take a small eternity (56K :( ), Offline mode is difficult to get established, spent hours on the forums getting infomation :(. And all i want to do is play the game at a LAN with no internet.

Just to get it upto date i am gonna have to take my computer around to someones house and wait for the update to complete.

I see from the orums that i am not the only person having these problems when all i want to do is play the game at a LAN with no internet.

Wow… people are still using dialup? :)

When Half-Life 2 first came out, there were some issues with offline mode. Now (apparently) all you need to do is hit the cancel button when it first tries to authenticate with Steam. That should throw you straight into offline mode.

So long as everyone is running the same version and you all have unique keys, you shouldn’t have any trouble. (Obviously, this is assuming that you’ve got the game setup and running first)

Also, if you grab someone else’s cache files (use the backup option for whatever game you want) and copy them to your drive, that should save you having to download the updates again.

Yes yes, the price of boredband here is still quite high

Should ??? Doesnt. One of our members has the latest updates and when he tries to go into offline mode he gets the message about being connected to the net.
Also if you need to stay logged into Steam to play in offline mode, how do you do that if you need to move you computer “external battery”?

I am sure we will figure it out in time but i would have rather not wasted my time doing it :)

Is this person online when they try this? Perhaps you need to actually be offline to go offline? It makes sense if you think about it.

He is at the LAN so yes he is offline
mmm…Wonder if it trys to connect through the LAN (NIC)
but this is why i dont like steam

It will try to connect if it thinks there’s a net connection out there, but it should just time out when it realises that it can’t contact the server. I think that part depends on how Windows is configured.

My suggestion would be to unplug the network, start Steam in offline mode, and then connect the network again. You should be able to disable the NIC instead of physically unplugging it, if that’s an issue.

Ok here is one more for you.
I went to my folks house to update CS and HL2.
Everything was fine in offline mode after that.
But when i went to play CSCZ it said the game was not ready because of Steam :(
Give me a break i didnt even ask it to update CSCZ while i was connected. I might have to sue Valve for invase destruction of a decent copy of CSCZ

Steven, you are not “kool”. “Kool” people would realise that this post is over 18 months old. Spamming like this will not win you any new friends.

As for CS:CZ, just play it on Steam like everyone else. That is, unless you’re not “kool” enough to have a legal copy.
